How I replaced the screen of my Thinkpad X270

What do we have here?

So I had this Thinkpad X270 for some time, and it’s still a good laptop for some of my activities. Activities include using Windows 10 to read/write BIOS dumps and countless attempts to read Smart Battery info via SMBus. Anyway, that specific laptop came with a horrid TN 1366x768(a.k.a. “HD”) screen. It’s okay for what I use that laptop for, but it’s never a bad idea to use a better screen.

Luckily, this model is very easy to upgrade. There are a lot of compatible screens, and I picked one from Amazon because it was the fastest way to get one in my case.

The process

It is very straightforward. All you have to do is:

  • unpack the new screen and put it aside
  • power off the laptop,
  • remove the screen bezel (it’s held by plastic hooks, no adhesive is used), simply by prying it off from the inner perimeter
  • tilt the screen forward(just let it rest on the keyboard) so you can access its back side
  • disconnect the cable (there was a piece of tape and a metal bracket that I had to unlatch)
  • remove the old screen
  • put the new screen in place of the old one (facing down, resting on the keyboard)
  • attach the connector, latch the metal bracket and put the tape back
  • tilt the screen back into the top frame so you can test if it works
  • power on the laptop and see if the screen works fine
  • if everything is good — install the front bezel by aligning it with the top frame and gently applying pressure around the screen to reattach the plastic hooks
  • Done!

What screen did I use

I got this IPS FHD screen on Amazon. Here is an affiliate link - https://amzn.to/3G5j6mg (I may earn some commission if you purchase it using that link)

It takes around five minutes and doesn’t require any special tools.
